Finding Yourself Sulking A Lot Lately? How Meditation Can Help

Meditation is a powerful tool that is used by many people to allow them to find optimism, hope and peace in their daily lives. Stress and anxiety are the companions of modern life, but they do not have to rule your life if you do not let them. Meditation can actually train your brain to see life in a new light and can offer you the chance to escape from self-doubt, anxiety and sadness. This is why meditation can be very helpful if you find yourself sulking.

Meditation is easy to add to your daily routine as it does not require any equipment or any expense. You simply need to make time for at least fifteen minutes of quiet where you can allow you mind to calm down and shed its worries over the things that are going on around you.  Allowing the mind to rest and find peace is a powerful tool that will allow it to heal and to learn new ways to look at life and any challenges that you face.

There are many challenges that you might face in your daily life, from work stress, to stress caused by parenting, to feelings of depression or sadness about current events. If you are unable to dismiss these thoughts from your mind, your brain will learn to use them as the jumping off point for its assessment of daily events.

This unhealthy cycle of negative thinking that has become a habit, will become the way that your brain forces you to see your whole life unless you are able to break the cycle. Thankfully, the brain learns from repetition. Anything that your brain has learned that is not productive can be unlearned through daily practice. If you think about meditation as a practice, you will find that your brain will become more and more accustomed to thinking positively and your outlook on life will change dramatically.

What is Sulking?

Sulking is being silent or bad-tempered due to a feeling of disappointment or annoyance with life. Sulking usually follows events like a break-up, not getting picked for a job you interviewed for or possibly also due to a change in life circumstance for some other reason. While sulking is more often associated with teenagers or children, adults are able to sulk just as well as younger people.

Sulking is insidious and slowly worms its way into your thinking. As your internal mantra become obsessed with the perceived unfairness of the event that has taken place, your internal dialogue will begin to justify your feelings of anger or annoyance about it. After a while, the sulky feelings you have related to a particular event will become the set point for your brain.

When the set point of your brain has been changed from a positive one to a sulky one, you will see daily events as being unfair or limiting even if they are not. There is an undercurrent of self-obsession involved in sulking that can sometimes be hard to overcome. Sulky people see every action taken by others as a threat to their feelings and their self-worth and are often defensive and grumpy as well.

If you recognize yourself in this description, you should not feel bad. Being sad or defeated by an event in your life is normal and can sometimes lead to a cycle of incorrect thinking that is harmful to your overall health and well-being. Thankfully, meditation can help you to overcome your sulky attitude and replace it with one that is healthier and more uplifting.

Using Meditation to Defeat Sulking

Meditation offers the power to release negative thought patterns and replace them with positive ones. For people who are struggling to accept a life event that has caused them pain, meditation can allow you to find the inner peace necessary to truly examine the painful event and deal with effectively. It is part of our brain’s native functions to use our fight or flight center to react to challenges. Meditation can help to shut down this process, allowing us to see the events with our rational brain.

If you are aware that you are sulking about something that has happened to you, you are likely not finding the means to deal with something that has hurt your feelings or made you sad. This is normal and you should not allow self-blame to intrude on your brain. Instead, find a quiet room and allow yourself to relax.

Once you are relaxed and you have allowed your mantra of negative thoughts to slip away, your brain will start to see the break-up or the disappointment as a simple event that happened once and not a life sentence. Sulking will be easily defeated if you are able to see the event logically and if you can allow yourself to feel the sadness or pain and then let that emotion slip away as well. Freeing your present state of mind from the sadness and anger of a disappointment is the power that is required to find inner peace and a more optimistic outlook.

If you know someone who is struggling with a loss and is being sulky, or if you yourself are being sulky about an event in your life, afford yourself or the person the right to be hurt or sad and do not place any judgement on the emotions involved. Emotions are useful to us in many ways and they are not a reason to find fault. Once you have reached a state of personal forgiveness, being able to let go of other emotions surrounding an event will be much easier.

Meditation has the power to teach your brain to view a loss as one event in your life and not the only event in your life. Not only that, meditation can also allow you to find inner peace and it can heal your brain.  Using meditation as part of your daily routine can heal your mind and body and can allow you to stop sulking and move forward with optimism and hope.
