Can Meditation For Sadness Truly Help?

Sadness, or depression, is a common ailment that afflicts people of all ages and from all walks of life.  Many people continue to struggle against depression symptoms even when they are in counseling or are taking medication to help them with their condition.  Depression is not an easy condition to grapple with but there are tools beyond medication and therapy that can help to change the way that your brain reacts to events and challenges.

While mediation cannot replace care by professionals, it can be a great companion to medication and therapy.  The human brain can be trained through repetition and mediation is one of the best ways to provide the necessary repeated inputs that will help to re-wire your brain.  Meditation allows you to dismiss negative emotions and helps you to reframe your life outlook from a positive set point instead of a negative one.

You may have been envious of positive people in the past always roll with the punches and learn to see the good in everything. You may have thought that their way of looking at life is part of them, just like their hair color or eye color. Thankfully, mindset is not a fixed trait and you can change your mindset if you want to. To create a positive mindset, you simply have to practice the skills that you can learn from meditation.

What Meditation Does to Help Combat Sadness

Meditation has been shown to have an actual physical affect on the brain, demonstrating that it is of benefit to those who practice it both physically and mentally. Studies have shown that daily meditation can shrink the amygdala, which is the center for anxiety and fear. For those who have struggled with a lifetime of anxiety and depression, rewiring the brain can make the difference between healthy thinking and depressed thinking.

Clinically depressed people often show decreased levels of serotonin in the brain and reduced neurotransmitter function. When these companion issues attack the brain, depression is the brain’s response to this chemical imbalance. While anti-depressants work well for some people to correct this chemical imbalance, for others, these medications only partially alleviate the symptoms they are experiencing.

Thankfully, meditation has been shown to increase feel good hormones and increase serotonin output.  To add to this, re-framing negative thinking can help to build up your brain’s positive references and memories so that it does not immediately focus on the negative things that it has experienced. The tandem action of increased serotonin and positive references can greatly benefit your brain and can defend it against the damage done by anxious thoughts and negative memories.

For people dealing with anxiety and stress along with depression, meditation teaches them to calm their body and think only of the present moment. This act of centering allows the body to calm and reduce cortisol levels.  Removing the chemical cocktail that is causing the fear and stress can boost serotonin and create new brain pathways that will allow for better future feelings about challenges or difficult experiences.

New research has shown that depression is a learned behavior, just like fear of places or people can be a learned behavior.  For those who struggle with being hyper-focused on the bad things in their life, the incessant obsession with negative things can lead to a depressed way of seeing all other things in their life as well. The brain’s set-point basically gets stuck on depressed. Meditation paired with positive affirmation statements can help to break this cycle of relentless negative thinking and re-wire the brain.

Depression is often rooted in fearful thoughts, so turning the brain’s attention away from these fearful thoughts can allow present-mind focus to take over.  Once you are able to look at the present moment and not obsess about past negative things that have happened to you, you be able to start to teach your brain to look at the good things in your life rather than the sad things.

The Power of Meditation and Positive Affirmations For Sadness

Meditation is not expensive to undertake and it does not require that you attend classes or even download an app to your phone. Meditation can be as simple as sitting in a quite room and calming your thoughts enough that you can let go of sadness and anxiety and focus of the current situation, which is peaceful. Because meditation is accessible to everyone, it is one of the most powerful ways that you can improve your health without having to budget for classes, gimmicks or medicines.

Meditation works like a tool kit to help your brain heal.  Using meditation daily along with the power of positive affirmation can literally alter the way your brain thinks. Instead of thinking, “ugh, I have to go that party”, you can teach your brain to think, “I think going out to that party will cheer me up”. Positive people are often using their meditation toolkit to help them to be that way and you are cheating yourself if you are not doing the same.

Emotions are the result of the way that we interpret things that happen to us. Using meditation and positive affirmations daily can help us to teach out brain to interpret things from a totally new and more positive perspective. As you get more skilled at meditation, you will be able to view your reactions from an objective place and re-frame them as needed.  This skill set is invaluable to those struggling with depression.

Meditation will allow you to grow your own awareness of yourself and teach yourself how to work on your own problems with sadness. Imagine the power of being able to train your brain to feel new ways about old experiences! The power of meditation can help to end your depression once and for all. Meditation can make your brain impervious to depression and unlock a life you never thought that you could lead.

Long time supporter, and thought I’d drop a comment.

Your wordpress site is very sleek – hope you don’t mind
me asking what theme you’re using? (and don’t mind if I steal it?
    :P)

I just launched my site –also built in wordpress like
yours– but the theme slows (!) the site down quite a bit.

In case you have a minute, you can find it by searching for
“royal cbd” on Google (would appreciate any feedback) – it’s still in the works.

Keep up the good work– and hope you all take
care of yourself during the coronavirus scare!

      Hi Nate,
      Thanks.
      Feel free to “steal”.
Will check what I used and let you know.
Coronavirus means my blog content updates will be slow as my day business takes precedence for a wee while.
